Pretty Tetra belongs to the family Characidae and comes from the Peruvian region of the upper reaches of the Amazon. It was imported in 1938.
The body of Pretty Tetra fish is deep, compressed, greenish, up to 5 cm long. The fish has on its neck several shiny patches and behind the gills there is a glistening red fleck. On the caudal peduncle is a wedge-shaped, deep red blotch, embellished by a shining gold bar. The majority of its fins are reddish. The male is slimmer than the female.

Flame tetra, also known as red tetra, belongs to the family Characidae and comes from the environs of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It was imported into Europe in 1920.
The body of flame tetra fish is elongate, slightly compressed, transparent, about 4 cm long and shiny gray in color. Its sides are bronze to red, and its back is brilliant red as are the majority if its fins. The anal fin has a black leading edge and tip. The male is smaller and its anal fin is distinctly edged with black.

Blood characin is a member of the family Characidae and comes from the lower reaches of the Amazon, from the Para and Bahia states. It was imported into Europe in 1931.
The body of blood characin is elongate, oval, flattened at the sides, about 4 cm long, greenish, the trunk and the back are often blood-red. Behind the gills there is a distinct black dotted fleck, on the dorsal fin there is a large black fleck, and the anal fin too is bordered with black. The male is slimmer and more brightly colored.

The body of flag tetra is cylindrical, up to 5 cm long, and brownish. From the gills to the root of the tail there is a broad tri-colored band composed of red, white, and black stripes. The male has a transparent cavity on its back.

Red-spotted tetra belongs to the family Characidae and comes from Colombia. The fish is similar to H. ornatus but is larger in size. The body is brown-red with a violet shine. Behind the head at the sides there is a distinct red, pearl-bordered blotch up to 3-4 cm. The upper part of the iris is blood-red, the lower part is white. There is a black stripe across the middle of the eye. The dorsal fin of the male is marked by a sickle-shaped line. The female’s red blotch behind the gills is of a deeper shade.
