How big is an Angler fish

So, how big is an Angler fish? Well, answering this question is difficult since the maximal and average size of an Angler fish varies greatly depending on species and sex. Today, we know about more than 200 different Angler fish species and they belong to a wide range of different families and genera. The question “How big is an Angler fish?” must therefore be answered with another question – “Which Anglerfish?”

The size difference between males and females are most striking in some of the deep sea Angler fish species. These fishes live so far down in the ocean to regions where sunlight does not reach. Finding a suitable mate in this dark environment is hard and many deep sea Angler fish species have therefore developed a strange form of relationship between the sexes. The male have no digestive system and his only aim is to try to find a female fish of the same species. He will then attach his teeth to her flank and excrete an enzyme that makes the male and female fish merge together. The male will live as a parasite attach to the female. Males do not hunt, their blood system is linked to the blood system of the female and he receives all his nutrition from her. In order for this system to work, the males have to be much smaller than the females. A female deep sea Angler fish can grow up to one yard (91 centimetres) or more, while the male will be around 4-6 inches when he reaches maturity and attach himself to a female. He will then deteriorate and become smaller. Before you can answer the question “How big is an Angler fish?” you must therefore also know if it is male or a female.
